All You Need to Know About Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

What Is SEO?

When you use a search engine like google to search for something, it wants to display the most relevant search results for your queries. But in order to do so, it needs to know what each website is about so that i ranks the ones on top that are most relevant. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is meant to do that. SEO helps search engines know what’s on your page, so that it shows in more results. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a principle to follow when designing a website and the content for that website so that it is more likely to appear higher in search results.

SEO ELI5 For Newbies

If the jargon above seems hard to grasp, let’s try to understand SEO by drawing parallels to some examples. When you play football, you have to follow certain rules. For example, you have to get the ball in the net, in order to score a goal, but you can’t just pick it up and put it there. You and your team must find the best way of using your feet to get the ball into the net.

When you search for something on Youtube or instagram, the platforms follow some rules to see what videos or items are shown first. Now it’s up to the business or the seller to find the best way to write their title and description (and other things) to play by the rules and get their video or item into the goal, which is to be first, second or third in the list. Tweaking your content (and other things) to best play by the rules is called SEO.

How Does SEO Work?

SEO is all about getting your webpages to show up near the top of the search results when someone searches for terms related to your website.

To accomplish this, there are 2 types of SEO

  • Natural or organic SEO
  • Paid or pay per click SEO

Natural or Organic SEO

All search engines have a secret algorithm that ranks pages based on how those pages are constructed and what content is on them. Natural SEO is all about optimizing your webpage so that the various search engines will naturally put your results near the top of the list. This includes tweaking things like using the terms that users are searching for, optimizing page headers, page titles, metatags, page content, and lots of other factors

Paid or Pay Per Click SEO

Paid SEO refers to those search ads you see on the various search engines. Basically, you “bid” (like an auction) on those specific terms and each time a user searches on those terms, the search engine will determine which ads to display (there may be 20 people bidding on that word, but only the top 2 or 3 get displayed), and if a user clicks on that link, it costs you. The amount you bid and the amount you pay for every click is an ongoing cost.
